Marjorie Post Park to host Dog Walkathon Oct. 28 Elks dinner/dance Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the fourth annual Paws for Parkinson's dog walk will be held on Sunday, October 28, at Marjorie R. Post Park, Merrick and Unqua Roads in Massapequa. The walk officially kicks off at 12:30 p.m., rain or shine, with registration beginning at 11 a.m. "This event attracts hundreds of canines and their owners each year," Supervisor Venditto said. "It's a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your pets, as well give them a chance for some socialization. The best part is the proceeds go to a wonderful cause." The walk is sponsored by the Long Island Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA). "In addition to the comfortable one-mile walk, activities planned for the event include a canine agility course, a 'Halloween Hounds' Doggie Costume Contest, tricks and treats, raffles, refreshments and more," Supervisor Venditto said. "Top fund raisers will also receive some great prizes. Donations to the walk will fund cutting-edge research for Parkinson's, with a portion of the net proceeds also being donated to local participating non-profit animal shelters." Registration is $25 per dog. Each dog receives a Halloween bandana and goody bag. Everyone is invited to walk, with or without a dog. "Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that results from degeneration of cells in a region of the brain that controls movement," Supervisor Venditto explained. "Although no cure exists, promising new treatments have been developed over the past few years, and research is ongoing. It's important to have events like this to help raise money to fund research. As doctors gain a better understanding of the genetic underpinnings of Parkinson's, they will be able to develop still better medications. I hope all residents join the APDA at this very fun and very important event." On Fridays, November 2 and December 7, the Massapequa Elks willl be holding a dinner and dancing event. The donation for the dinner is $18 and includes an entree, salad bar, dessert and beverage. The dinner begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Lodge is located at 2162 Veterans Blvd., Massapequa. Reservations are needed prior to each dance, October 22 for the November 2 dance and November 21 for the December 7 dance. For information call 798-2162.
