Walter Kregel: Educator, Massapequa Park resident

Longtime Massapequa Park resident and Valley Stream teacher Walter R. Kregel died October 1, 2007. He was 78 years old and had lived on Gem Lane in Massapequa Park for 47 years.

Born August 18, 1929 in the Bronx to Walter R. and Connie (nee Hanke), he served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954. He was awarded the National Defense Service medal for his tour of duty.

For 35 years he taught in Valley Stream District #24 as a sixth grade teacher. According to his daughter, Katherine, most of all he loved to spend time with his loved ones and take his family on vacations.

Mr. Kregel leaves behind his second wife wife, Irmgard; his children: Katherine Smith and her husband William of Amityville, Thomas and his wife Jeanette of Northport, Karen of Massapequa Park, Timothy and his wife Karen of Holtsville, Alexander and his wife Tara of Rocky Point and Monica Lorch of Massapequa Park; his grandchildren: Kristina Smith, Melissa Smith, Glen Smith, Lauren, Jennifer, Jorge, Andrew, Cailey and A.J.

Father Richard T. Stelter, pastor, St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church, officiated at a funeral service in the Powell Funeral Home, Amityville, on October 4, 2007. Interred in L.I. National Cemetery, Pinelawn, with Military Honors on October 5, 2007.
