Massapequa resident achieves highest honor in Girl Scouting

This year 72 Girl Scouts in Nassau County have fit in a minimum of 65 hours to improve their communities. These young women developed Gold Award community action projects, promoting acts of kindness and goodwill which ultimately make the world a better place. Their efforts earn these Girl Scouts the Gold Award, the highest honor that a young woman can achieve in Girl Scouting. Michelle Finegan, of Massapequa, earned the Gold Award this year.

Finegan, entitled her Gold Award project Sharing Happiness at Ronald McDonald House, and included preparing, cooking and serving two dinners to families who have terminally ill children at the Ronald McDonald House. The project allowed families to spend an evening dining together without the obligation of having to cook or serve the meal. Finegan recently graduated from Farmingdale High School where she was the president of Interact Club, the secretary of the Spanish Honor Society, and a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and Varsity Leaders Club. She was also the captain of the Varsity Tennis team and fourth doubles on the Varsity Badminton team. In addition, Finegan is a religious education teacher at her church and volunteer for the Association for the Help of Retarded Children. In the fall she plans to attend the University of Delaware and major in Elementary Education.

On June 3, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County honored Senior Girl Scouts between the ages of 16 and 18 at a special ceremony held at SUNY Old Westbury. On June 18, Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi presented the girls, along with their Eagle Scout Award counterparts from Boy Scouts, with certificates for their achievements at the Cradle of Aviation. Girl Scout Gold Award recipients, along with this year's Eagle Scouts, were also recognized by Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray on June 2 at the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve.
