TOB Board approves tax exemption for spouses of firefighters and EMTs

The Oyster Bay Town Board has approved legislation to extend a property tax exemption for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers in the Town to unremarried spouses of members who die in the line of duty, it was announced by Town Supervisor John Venditto.

"In 2002, the Town Board, at my request, approved legislation that authorized a special property tax exemption for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers with at least five years of experience," Supervisor Venditto said. "Now, the Town Board, has, at my request, extended the tax exemption to unremarried spouses of volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers who lose their lives in the line of duty."

"Our volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers daily perform an invaluable service to our communities," Supervisor Venditto stated. "This tax exemption will be the Town's way of saying 'thanks' not only to the men and women who give so generously of their time and talents to provide fire protection and emergency ambulance service to the Town's residents, but to the wives and husbands who support their loved ones, dealing with sometimes hectic schedules, beeping pagers at all times of the day and night, and the awareness that every time their husband or wife is called out, they could be face to face with danger."

The Supervisor noted that a public hearing on the proposed legislation was held on August 28.
