Robert Bennett: Navy veteran, Massapequa resident A longtime Massapequa resident and Navy veteran who fought in two wars, Robert T. Bennett died October 6, 2007 after a brief illness in Spring Hill, Florida. He was 80 years old. Born in Jamaica, Queens he joined the Navy while still in high school, and served in the Korean War and later in World War II. "Our whole romance was by letters because we met between wars," said his wife Joan. "He was a wonderful man." Following their marriage, the couple moved to Seaton Street in Massapequa when the area was so rural that the nearest stores were in Amityville. Several years later, they bought a bigger house on Harrison Avenue, and lived there for 45 years. In 1992, they retired to Florida. Mr. Bennett worked as an ice-cream salesman for Borden Milk Products and Schrafft's Ice Cream, before working in computer technology at a local office. An NRA member and gun collector, Mr. Bennett enjoyed spending time at the firing range in his spare time. He leaves behind his wife, Joan; his children: Robert, Scott, Tom, Jim, Kathleen Heath and Roland; and his nine grandchildren. A private ceremony was held at Turner Funeral Homes in Spring Hill, Florida.
