Painted sidewalk political sign angers MPK officials
by Tiffany Elliott

Sign on sidewalk in Massapequa Park Village has officials angry and taking steps to eliminate it.
Village officials were angry two weeks ago when they found a huge spray-painted campaign sign on the sidewalk under the Massapequa Park Long Island Railroad train station. Massapequa Park Village Mayor James Altadonna called the incident "inappropriate."

The sign read: "Children need their fathers. Please support the Equal Parenting Party. Vote for Stuart Meltzer."

Meltzer, a Long Beach resident and a member of the Equal Parenting Party, said he did not authorize anyone in his campaign to paint the sign, but understands the frustration of those who supported his candidacy. He lost the election.

"Fathers are losing custody of their children at an alarming rate," he said. "I can understand if an overzealous supporter decided to bring this issue to the forefront of the public."

He added that he did not know who committed the act but said it could also have been done by a "disgruntled victim, or a political rival seeking to discredit my campaign."

Meltzer, who lost his bid for a seat on the Family Court bench November 6, was seeking a tenyear term, which pays an annual salary of $136,000. According to the website Mad Men United (Men Against Discrimination), he has had more than 18 years of experience in the family, matrimonial and criminal courts.

According to Village Administrator Peggy Caltabiano, however, the Village filed a police complaint on the incident and is looking at several options to clean up the sign.
