FSD reaching out to get STAR info. to residents
by Kelly Walter

The Farmingdale Board of Education and school administrators are working to meet with different organizations in the district to get the word out about STAR, a new middle class tax rebate program offered by the state. However, many older residents who may not be aware of this opportunity because the primary information center for this program is through the schools and they may not have children in the district. Residents have until December 31 to apply for the property tax rebate and receive hundreds of dollars in tax relief which are in addition to savings they already receive through the STAR program.

As a result, the district is planning to meet with various community organizations to get the word out.

In order to receive the rebate, residents must submit an application either online or by mail.

"Since some of our seniors may not have computers or know how to use the internet, we are going to go to our senior citizens and help them [apply]," said John Lorentz, Superintendent of Farmingdale School District.

One community organization the Board of Education is looking to work with is Friends of Farmingdale Athletics. This booster club has worked with the Farmingdale School District before on several projects, raising funds for the students and the schools. Keeping clubs and organizations involved, like Friends of Farmingdale Athletics, will help keep the community more informed about what is happening within their community and how their tax dollars are being spent.

At the Sept. 19 school board meeting, resident Robert Thompson addressed the board saying he was impressed by the work that was done to the school grounds and in the school buildings, such as the installation of the new boilers at the Albany Avenue and Howitt schools. He said that although he is involved in the community, he was "out of the loop" and didn't realize how much so until he attended the board meeting.

"We are continuing our campaign to make sure everyone knows what is going on," said Lorentz as the topic of keeping the public informed about all school-related issues was discussed at the meeting.

Another issue on the agenda at the board meeting was the recognition of administrative and teacher tenure. Fifteen teachers and 3 administrators received tenure, and were acknowledged at the meeting including: Jacquelyn Passante, Janet Gordon, Eric Hulse, Susan McDonough, James Kontakis, Joseph Glascott, Therese Mannino, Kelli McCarroll, Lidia Horyn, Staci Mauro, Jeanmarie Dwyer, Erin Kinsley, Sharon Luquer, Jennifer Bertalon, Jacqueline Parente, Guilia Marano, Carol Anselmo, and Kathy Keevins.
