Post 1066 Holds Flag Retiring Ceremony
"We are very glad that so many people came out because they are concerned with proper flag disposal," said Jack Hipp, Commander of Post 1066 . "So far this year we have disposed of 300 pounds of retired flags." Local veterans, residents, cub scouts and public officials came out to solemnly watch the ceremony held in the veteran's memorial garden, which honors missing solders. The Post treated everyone to a barbecue lunch (with the traditional place setting for lost soldiers in place) after retiring the worn or tattered flags. Flames rose, consuming the banners of hope and freedom that were brought forward by representatives of the many groups in attendance. Residents and businesses routinely drop off tattered and faded Old Glory's at the Post, and they are burned, the flames representing the first flames of America's fight for freedom.
Any resident or group that has a flag they would like to retire can drop it off in the lobby of Post 1066 in the converted mailbox placed there for that purpose. There is also a mailbox at Massapequa Park Village Hall, 151 Front Street.
