Writer: PETA concerns for turkeys is misguided Dear Editor: I read with both amusement and skepticism the Letter to the Editor from the Senior writer from the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). It was amusing to the extent that the writer tries to cloak her desire, to achieve ethical treatment of animals, in a letter which addresses only the issue of a Presidential pardon for only two turkeys at Thanksgiving time. I am skeptical of the issues she raises, since if she and the organization, which she represents, were genuinely concerned about the fate of animals, why not advocate the extension of the Presidential or public pardons to all animals, including but not limited to cows, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese and other such warm-blooded animals slaughtered for food in this country. Why shouldn't their concern also encompass the same domestic animal as well as dogs, cats, horses, rats and other warm-blooded animals which are slaughtered and find their way into the food chain in other parts of the world. The idea of a vegetarian diet, apparently advanced on their website, if taken to its logical conclusion and became the reality that she seems to advance, would probably have many giants of industry like MacDonalds, Purdue Chicken, a host of steak houses, not to mention thousands of other restaurants, as well as millions of farmers who raise the livestock as well as the myriad of wholesalers, jobbers and retailers who bring these products and bi-products thereof to the public out of work. You have to be careful about what you wish for, because someday your wish may be granted. Harold N. Lederman Massapequa
