Food Addicts Anonymous to celebrate

It was 20 years ago on December 7 that the first Food Addicts Anonymous (FAA) meeting was held in West Palm Beach, Florida. Judith C., the founder had spent a lifetime trying diet after diet, and time after time she failed. It was only after being hospitalized that she met some people in the health field who told her that there were certain foods that no matter how hard she tried to control eating them, she couldn't - that she was an addict. With this information, she started this fellowship. With the permission of Alcoholics Anonymous the twelve steps were modified specifically to deal with food addition and a suggested food plan was formulated.

There are now at least 150 meetings worldwide as well as phone and online meetings. The only FAA meeting on Long Island meets every Sunday, 10 a.m. at 2701 Middle Country Rd., Lake Grove.

Food Addicts Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who are willing to recover from the disease of food addiction. There are no dues or fees for FAA membership. The group is not affiliated with any diet or weight loss programs, treatment facilities or religious organizations.
