State announces completion of improvements at Massapequa Creek
"I am pleased that this project has remedied past concerns about erosion and storm-water runoff from nearby roadways and now provides safe recreational access to the Massapequa Creek," said Subi Chakraborti, the DOT's regional director. "Projects such as these that expand beyond traditional transportation projects and are undertaken with the help and cooperation of our fellow public agencies help protect Long Island's natural resources with a cleaner, healthier environment for our children and generations to come." The project was part of the DOT's $3.1 million runoff mitigations initiative program. Nassau County helped fund a portion of the Massapequa project, which N.C. Leg. Peter Schmitt described as significantly improving the area. "It looks much better and it will give the residents a nicer parking area and trail # for biking," said Schmitt. In related matters, Schmitt said that the larger estuary enhancement and preservation project is moving forward. The $6 million plan is to improve the north-south waterways from the northern part of Massapequa down to Caroons Lake at Merrick Road. It is the largest public works projects for preservation in the county's history, said Schmitt. "The bids are out and we anticipate work to begin in the spring," he said.
