Dalers put out best effort; come up short For Long Island Class I Title
Probst ends impressive season
by Christopher Vaccaro

Farmingdale may have lost, 42-0, to William Floyd in the Class I Long Island title game, but that didn't take away from an impressive career put forth by Dalers' quarterback Steve Probst.

The Hofstra-bound pass hurler clearly was one of the best players on Long Island over the last two years and ironically will be joined by Floyd's top players, quarterback Joe Sidaras and running back Brock Jackolski on the Pride next season.

"They're great guys," said Probst, who will compete with Sidaras for the starting quarterback position right out of the gates. "I'm excited to be with them."

Probst injured his ankle and missed three games during the season, but toughed out an appearance in the championship game that didn't start or end favorably for anyone with any ties to Farmingdale.

He should be a lock for the Don Snyder Award, given to the best quarterback in Nassau County, and his 5- of-18 passing statistics for 48 yards was not indicative of his true abilities.

His five touchdown, 229-yard rushing performance against Freeport in a big Conference I battle on Oct. 12 was probably his best performance, but certainly not his last.

"He was our lead dog," said Buddy Krumenacker, Farmingdale's longtime head coach. "He's the guy without question that made us go. He can throw, run, but above all it's his certainty that makes him good."

Probst said he had all the motivation in the world to beat Floyd and disrupt the dynasty, which hasn't lost in three years now. The motivation didn't help on the field, but his abilities were evident and he'll be close to home playing in college in about seven months.

This season was special for Long Island quarterbacks. It may be the best recruiting class ever for signal callers. With Sidaras and Probst headed to Hofstra and East Islip's Rob Calabrese on his way to the University of Central Florida, it leaves Lawrence's P.J. Preziosa and St. Anthony's James Brady with decisions on where to play.
