St. David's reaches out to the deaf

More than 17 years ago the members of St. David's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Massapequa Park recognized the need to reach out to the deaf community and create a service where the world could be understood by all. It was then that St. David's established a Deaf Ministry committee to begin tackling the challenge of supporting a sign-language program during the Sunday 9:30 a.m. worship service.

According to Patricia McCarthy, the church's first interpretershe still is signing the weekly Sunday service 18 years later. McCarthy also helps to organize the group's Christmas party which has grown to more than 75 adults and children. Many of the invited party goers are from surrounding communities and of different faiths. Santa stops in during the get- together and homemade refreshments are served.

Shown in the photo are some early arrivers with Patricia McCarthy, in the Santa hat.
