Packard-Picken plan is a good deal for taxpayers
Editorial

A controversial proposal between the Plainedge School District and Town of Oyster Bay is being considered. It would, if approved, transfer ownership of the site of the Plainedge Packard Middle School to Oyster Bay, while in return, Oyster Bay would transfer ownership of the former Picken elementary School that now houses Town Hall South.

Undoubtedly there are questions and issues that the community continues to raise and all of them must be addressed by both the Town and the School District before a vote is set.

We believe, however, that the proposal is a good way to address problems both public entities face- the town needs a larger site for Town Hall South and the district would be in a better financial situation if it could be relieved of the Packard property. In addition, the deal ensures that Plainedge would have room for growth in the future.

The community should continue to ask questions but be ready to move forward in a timely manner to give the public an opportunity to vote on the plan. Stalling it or sinking it without such a opportunity is not fair.
