New Island Hospital's 5K run breaks all previous records

New Island Hospital held it's 8th Annual 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, September 30, 2007 at Bethpage State Park Polo Field. This event attracted 305 runners, making this 5K Run the most successful the hospital has ever had. New Island Hospital thanks Dr. Scott Sherman and New Island Diagnostic Imaging, P.C. as major sponsors of this race and Edward Gross, MD and Joseph Koka, MD, event Co-Chairs.

Senator Kemp Hannon, Joseph Belesi representing Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Nassau County Legislator David Mejias (who also ran the race), Councilwoman Rose Marie Walker, and Rhonda Fisher from the District Attorneys Office, along with Aaron E. Glatt, MD President of New Island Hospital and Giovanni V. Distefano, CEO of New Island Hospital cheered the runners along.

Janice McIntyre and the Long Island Blood Bank Team ran a fast race; Dr. Michael Tumen and the Syosset High School Running Club had 45 runners participating and the Bellmore Running Club had a very large continuance. AMR Ambulance was on sight to support the hospital and provide medical assistance to the runners. New Island Hospital employees, and the Long Island Running Club volunteered to help coordinate the day's activities. New Island Hospital once again gave runners high-end prizes from their famous raffles and amazing give-aways in the goody bags. KJOY Radio Station provided music and entertainment during the event.

This race produced some fast outcomes. The overall male winner Michael Petrina from West Babylon won with a time of 16:05. Overall female winner was Michele Henshel from Levittown with a time of 19.26. male masters winner Alan Oman from Babylon won with a time of 19:13 and female masters winner Laura Gluf of Bethpage won with a time of 21:10.

New Island Hospital male employee winner was Frank D'Andrdin from Seaford with a time of 25:31, and the New Island Hospital Physician Winner was Dr. Michael Tumen with a time of 21:22.

This was a tight race with Michael Petrina and Franklin Diaz running neck and neck for the entire race until Michael pulled out near the finish line to take first place.
