John Bergaglio, Sr. at 94
Amityville-born John J. Bergaglio, Sr. who spent his career in construction, died January 22, 2008 at SunBridge Care in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. He was 94 years old.
He was born Nov. 1, 1913 to Giovanni and Giovanna (nee Lisari) in Amityville and went to school at St. Martin of Tours. While he and his wife raised their children in East Massapequa, he worked in heavy construction for Charles Vachris on Long Island for many years. After retirement he moved to New Durham, New Hampshire in 1964 where he opened a restaurant with his wife called The Foxy Johnnie B and later Johnnie B.'s Country Store.
He was a member of the St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church in Amityville, a communicant at the St. Joan of Arc Church in New Hampshire and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Bergaglio leaves behind his children: Lucy A. Fox and Madelene C. Montali; nine grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; his step-children: Mary Alice Serdock, Elizabeth Wagoner, Robert Fox and Jane Chisholm; 11 step grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and his long time caregiver, David J. O'Toole. He was predeceased by his wives: Helen A. (nee Beierling) and Marie J. Fox (nee Lehritter), his son John J. Bergaglio, Jr. on Aug. 8, 2007 and his step-son Charles Barry Fox.
He reposed at the Peaslee Funeral Home in Farmington, New Hampshire on Jan. 24, 2008. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Jan. 25, 2008 at St. Peter's Church in Farmington with Fr. W. Pierre Baker, pastor, as celebrant. Interment will be at the John Shirley Cemetery in New Durham, New Hampshire in the spring of 2008.
