State must take action on escalating property taxes

The New York State proposal, supported by Gov. David Paterson and passed by the Senate, to enact a tax cap on school spending may not be the total answer to escalating real estate property costs, particularly here on Long Island, but it is a beginning.

Some say it is not enough; others that it will be destructive to education, and still others believe that reining in costs at the local level is tied to reining in New York State lawmakers and the practice of passing along unfunded mandates.

Bringing property tax relief is likely to require all of the above. To refuse to respond to a complex problem with part of the solution is simply a major cop out. Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver should be ashamed of himself for bending to the pressure of the unions and failing to recognize the plight of millions of New Yorkers who are bending under the weight of the cost of education. His response to ignore the pain of those he his sworn to serve is Marie Antoinette-esque. Sorry, Silver, but many New Yorkers cannot afford to eat cake!
