A tough fall for Massapequa Chiefs

Saturday was going to be the game that would make the Chiefs the team to beat on Long Island. The game plan on Saturday Oct. 4, according to starting lineman Matt Imperio, was to "contain their speed, and the defense had to step up and play huge. Just play like last week against Baldwin." Since the Chiefs did take out the number one seeded Baldwin just one

week before, the plan seemed like a formula for success. But with the undefeated season on the line, a heartbreaking loss was what the Chiefs left Freeport with last Saturday.

Rob Von Bargen was not his usual brilliant self at the beginning of the game. Out of his first eight passes, he completed only one. But with one of the most important games of the season on the line, he knew that he had to overcome the rough beginning and give his team a chance to win. "I just kept thinking to the next play and had a short memory," he said. And with the end of the half looming, and the Chiefs down 7-0, Von Bargen threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Steve Romano to cut the lead down to one. The pass seemed to calm the senior quarterback down.

After a long touchdown pass from Acosta to Lapice to put Freeport up by eight points, the Chiefs drove down the field and threw one. A touchdown pass to John Kelly put the Chiefs down just two points, and when Jimmy Burrows made a miraculous diving catch to convert the two-point conversion, the game was finally tied.

But Freeport showed they had some fight in them and a game tying touchdown wasn't going to stop them from coming out victorious. After a final scoring exchange, the game was tied, and overtime would decide the outcome.

In overtime, The Chiefs struck first. A five-yard run by Von Bargen gave Massapequa the lead, and after a missed extra point, the advantage was just six points. But that lead was just a temporary comfort. A sixteen-yard touchdown pass was thrown from Acosta to Laprice to tie the game. The extra point was tacked on to conceal the victory and keep the Freeport Red Devils'undefeated season alive.

The game was a tough fall for Massapequa. With the unbeaten season on the line, a couple of special team miscues for Massapequa seemed to be the deciding factor in this hard fought battle. "Nothing really went wrong; it was a good fought game and both of us put everything to it. We just have to move on," starting lineman, Matt Imperio, added. Although the Chiefs did come out with a loss, Saturday showed that the Chiefs have as much heart as any team they step on a field with this year.
