The students from Maria Regina School, in Seaford, recently collected fruit for Island Harvest. Island Harvest is Long Island's largest food rescue organization. Last year, the organization rescued over seven million pounds of food from restaurants, grocery stores, and farms. The food rescued is distributed to soup kitchens, food banks, and shelters.

The 413 pieces of fruit that Maria Regina students donated will be used in Island Harvest's Weekend Backpack program. This program provides Long Island children who receive free breakfast and lunch at school with four nutritious, shelf stable meals to eat over the weekend when food may not available in their home. Third grade teacher Miss Meehan organized the donation of the fruit.
