No changes in Water and Fire District races; budgets status quo
Residents of local fire and water districts voted for the status quo Dec. 9, returning incumbent commissioners to their seats.
In the Massapequa Fire District, incumbent Commissioner Thomas McCarthy is keeping his seat for five more years. He defeated his challenger, Pat Pogan 404 to 278.
McCarthy, a 15-year Commissioner said he is pleased to be able to continue to serve in Massapequa. The department serves more than 60,000 residents and answers about 2,400 alarms a year.
Pogan also ran last year against incumbent Denis Molloy and was unsuccessful. He said he chose to run again because he believed he has something the board could use—a strong, independent voice.
In the North Massapequa Fire District, incumbent Frank Nocerino, who ran unopposed, garnered 130 votes. Nocerino has been a commissioner since 1984, and a member of the department since 1964. The department serves approximately 6,000 homes, and responds to about 900 alarms annually.
Both fire districts report that there will be no tax increases for residents in 2009.
The water districts also saw quiet races. In South Farmingdale, two incumbent commissioners ran unopposed. Treasurer Ralph Atoria, a 17 -year Commissioner, received 378 votes, while Commissioner Gary Brosnan won 372. Brosnan was appointed in August 2008 after the resignation of Commissioner Kurt Ludwig.
The district covers approximately 5.4-miles and serves about 12,600 homes and businesses.
In the Massapequa Water District race, 13- year Commissioner Frank Flood held onto his seat for three more years with 182 votes. He ran unopposed.
The Massapequa Water District covers 6.6-miles and serves approximately 48,000 customers.
