New location on menu for Butera's restaurant
by Tiffany Elliott

Butera's restaurant, which has been in Massapequa for 16 years, is relocating, along with Butera's Cafe, to Seaford.
A favorite family-owned restaurant is moving from Massapequa Park to Seaford as soon as this spring.

Butera's, a popular traditional Italian restaurant, is moving its location at 4964 Merrick Road across the street from the high school to a location on Sunrise Highway in Seaford. The restaurant has been there for 16 years.

"We don't consider it a closing, we're just relocating to a bigger place," said owner Martin Butera who has decided to move to combine the restaurant and Cafe Butera, currently both of which are in the Southgate Shopping Center.

Another factor in moving was that the Massapequa Park location was leased, while the Buteras have purchased the Seaford location at 3930 Sunrise Highway. Until recently that building housed David's Chinese Garden Too.

"Our lease is coming to term and we had to make a decision," said Butera. "We decided to invest and purchase a building. We wanted to stay as close to Massapequa as possible, where our customer base is, but nothing in Massapequa met our needs."

According to Butera, the Cafe that opened next door in 1995 was originally a coffee house with music, but has turned into another restaurant that serves eclectic American Italian foods. They intend to combine the best of both menus at their location.

Construction bids for the Seaford location are now being reviewed and the Buteras hope to be back in business by late spring or early summer. They also have restaurants in Woodbury and Smithtown.

"They have been part of our community and a business here in the Village for many years and we're sad to see them go," said Massapequa Park Mayor James Altadonna. "We wish them well in their new building."

Efforts to reach the owners of the shopping center, Kaplan Associates, were not successful. Sources said however, that there are no tenants at present ready to move into Butera's locations.
