Massapequa Student Named Math Scholar

Massapequa Schools announced that William

DeCesare, an eighth grader at Berner Middle School is among 75 students across Long Island to be named Young Scholar of Mathematics by The Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY College at Old Westbury. DeCesare has been accepted by the Institute to pursue mathematics and science studies. To qualify for this honor, William competed against 950 of the top ranking students nominated from school districts across Long Island. Acceptance was based on a rigorous entrance exam, school transcripts, math teacher recommendation, and a brief written statement by the student.

As part of the program, DeCesare has already begun 60 class hours during 20 Saturday mornings, and will be required to devote 60 hours to related outside projects. The curriculum at the Institute covers topics ranging from algebra, geometry, and number theory not included in students' standard course of study. Selected topics in science will be examined during the program as well.
