3rd Annual Soldier Fundraiser January 19th
by Tiffany Elliott

A fundraiser to benefit injured soldiers and police officers will be held in Wantagh on Saturday, Jan. 19. This will be the third successful year for the benefit held as a tribute to James D. McNaughton, a New York City Police Officer who was killed in Iraq.

"Jimmy made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom. We are hoping that this year's event in his honor will be even bigger and better," said Vinny Zecca, a longtime friend and organizer of the event.

Last year more than 800 people came to and a total of $30,000 was donated to the Wounded Warriers Project to help injured soldiers who have served around the world and to the James McNaughton Foundation, which provides scholarships to men and women who serve in the New York City Police Department.

A staff sergeant with the Army Reserve's 306th Military Police Battalion, 27-year old McNaughton was killed by a sniper Aug. 2, 2005 while training an Iraqi officer. He was the first New York City cop killed in the line of duty while serving in Iraq.

The fundraiser will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. at Mulcahy's Pub & Music Hall, 3232 Railroad Ave., Wantagh. Bands such as Hollaback, the N.Y. Shields and Pipes & Drums and comedian Nick DiPaolo will provide entertainment and food will be provided. The cost is $20 per person.
