Editorial A new law passed in Suffolk County provides the mechanism to have consumers and supermarkets recycle plastic grocery bags. The bill, sponsored by S.C. Leg. Wayne Horsley (DLindenhurst), avoids the less favorable issue of banning these items, and provides a use for them while at the same time preserving valuable natural resources. That kind of a combination is always a sound basis for a good law. Nassau should look to adopt a similar measure. Under the proposal, larger supermarkets must provide a container in which shoppers can put their used plastic bags. They will then be picked up by a recycling company and reused for manufacturing things like vinyl fencing. The bags were littering our streets and highways and added contaminants to our waste stream. The easy thing was to simply outlaw them. With thought and attention, however, a better alternative was found and we applaud Horsley and the legislature for this initiative.
