Massapequa educator named art teacher of the year

The New York State Art Teacher's Association has recognized Massapequa Public School District art teacher Ellen Cervone as Art Educator of the Year For Region Nine. The Massapequa Board of Education recently honored Cervone during one of their meetings for this prestigious accomplishment. "We see the fine work of the district's art teachers and students displayed here in our Board room and on our web site, and we are pleased that one of our own - Ms. Ellen Cervone - has been selected as Art Educator of the Year," said Interim Superintendent of Schools Charles Sulc.

Cervone has been a member of Massapequa's staff for seven years and is a member of the Long Island Art Teachers Association, and the New York State Art Teachers Association, where she serves as the State Coordinator for the Portfolio Project. Cervone is also a member of the National Art Educators Association, and has been nominated for many prestigious distinctions, including Disney Teacher of the Year, and the P. Buckley Moss Foundation Teacher's Award, which is designated for those who excel in teaching students with special needs. In addition, Cervone is a member of the Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEDPAC) and a member of the shared decision making team.

Cervone has done curriculum writing for the district, and helped the district receive an MTRACT grant for digital story telling. She is also the advisor for the art and photography club at McKenna Elementary School where she works full time as an art teacher.
