Amityville's Lou Luba, Massapequa PhysEd teacher and coach Ludwig F. "Lou" Luba, who taught physical education for 30 years in the Massapequa School District, died Dec. 9, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. He was 78. His son described him as an uncomplicated man who loved the simple things in life. It was a trait that he passed on to him, making his own life richer, said his son Dennis of New Jersey. "He was not very materialistic and appreciated the little things that help you appreciate life," said Dennis. He loved the outdoors, his grandchildren and watching the boats pass by behind his house." Born April 10, 1929 to Ludwig V. and Regina (nee Mohrbacher), he served in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. For 18 years he was the head football coach at Massapequa High school and helped them win Rutgers Cups in 1965 and 1968. He also coached wrestling and track. "Massapequa athletics is the envy of the Island and it all started with Coach Lou Luba," said Al Bevilacqua, a fellow Massapequa Hall of Fame member who, along with others, is looking to establish a scholarship in Mr. Luba's name. Mr. Luba lived in Amityville for more than 52 years in homes at Norman Avenue and Bunny Lane. He was a longtime member of St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church. He leaves behind his children: Dennis, Maura, Michael, Patrick and Matthew; his grandchildren: Brian, Eric, Ricky, Callie, Christopher, Brendan, Lexie, Rachel, Joshua and Ryan. His wife of 41 years, Mary, predeceased him in 1994.
He reposed at the Powell Funeral Home in Amityville, on Wednesday, Dec.12, 2007. Father Richard T. Stelter, pastor of St. Martin's R.C. Church, officiated at a Mass of Christian Burial assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family on Dec. 13, 2007. Interment followed in Amityville Cemetery.
