FBHS presents slide show on Washington painting Elizabeth Kahn Kaplan, art historian, will present a slide-lecture on Emanuel Leutze's iconic painting Washington Crossing the Delaware, at a meeting of the Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society on Sunday, Feb. 10. The program, will be given at the Farmingdale Public Library 116 Merritts Rd., 2 p.m. The presentation is funded by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities. Through analysis of the historical context of the event early on the morning of Dec. 26, 1776 which inspired the painting, immediately prior to the Battle of Trenton, Kaplan will recall George Washington's need for a dramatic victory for the Continental Army which the success at Trenton over the Hessians provided that morning. The painting's oft-noted "errors" will be shown as deliberate choices by the artist to create a work of great and longlasting emotional impact.
Lawrence R. Jorgensen, president of the Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society, invites all interested area residents to attend this free program, which is an informative mix of history and art. For more information, call 249-3099.
