MSD signs new, one-year contracts with its central administrative staff
by Carolyn James

The Massapequa School Board voted on a revision to the district's bylaws for central office administrators, increasing the amount of the employee's contributions for health care and approving salary raises.

The changes were adopted December 6, 2007 and call for salary increases of 4 percent or less for Acting Superintendent Charles Sulc, Alan Adcock, Susan Woodbury, Lucille Iconis, Robert Schilling, Vincent D'Amico, and Kathleen Wagner. The salary for the facilities director was not included in the new agreement.

The average salary for the seven positions was $123,623. Sulc's salary goes to $187,082, Adcock to $193,848, Woodbury and Iconis to $161,616, Schilling to $125,632, D'Amico $116,459 and Wagner $80,730.

In addition, the employees will pay an additional 2.7 percent toward their annual health care contribution over the 15 percent they previously paid.

State statistics showed that in the 2004-05 school year, the most recent year posted, the district's superintendent was earning $192,050; the deputy superintendent $159, 632 and assistant superintendents $157,364 and $155,736.

Central office administrators work a full year and receive 30-days of vacation, with the exception of the deputy superintendent and assistant superintendent for business who receive 35 days. In addition, the superintendent is permitted to grant up to five additional days when an employee "is required to provide extraordinary service outside the normal work week."

The school board is also entitled to give each of the administrators between a $2,500 and $5,000 stipend each year, based on performance. That option has not been utilized in recent years, however, said school officials. "I have been here for 9 years and I don't recall a single year in which the board opted to do this," said Adcock.

While the employees receive longevity payments, which remained at the previous levels under the amended bylaws, they do not receive step increases. Employees working for the district for ten years receive a stipend of $1,500; 15 years, $2,500; 20 years $3,000 and those working for the district 30 years or more continuously receive $5,500.

In related school matters, the school board recently

•appointed Peter Gangi, and Arlene Martin, co coordinators of the district's adult education program at an annual salary of $8,100, to be shared equally;

•accepted the resignations of Robert Gariglio, chairperson; Gregg Gudelinis, special education teacher assistant, Berner; Susan Pilock, foreign language teacher, Berner and Deana Squillacioti, elementary teacher at East Lake;

•accepted the retirement of teachers Marilyn Barr, Lorraine Freise, Patricia Kabelka, Susan Levinson, Gail Marcinik and RobinT osky- Monzingo, all effective June 30, 2008.

The board will hold two public sessions discussing the proposed school budget for 2008-09 on Thursdays, March 6 and 13. Both meetings will be held at 8 p.m. in the district's board room.
