'Pequan Patrick Doherty at 82
by Tiffany Elliott

Longtime Massapequa resident Patrick J. Doherty died suddenly Jan. 8, 2008. He would have been 83 years old in June. For more than 56 years he lived on Franklin Avenue and later on Michigan Avenue.

Born in Derry, Ireland, he came to America as a child with his parents after Ireland's War of Independence and was raised on Manhattan's Upper East Side. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and fought in the battle of Okinawa in 1945.

For many years, he worked for the Penn Central Railroad and later for Hofstra University at the student center in central administration. For more than 20 years he ran an antique and book business with his wife of 58 years, Kay, who died in 2006.

Mr. Patrick was a sports and model train enthusiast who stayed active his entire life, according to his son Patrick.

"My dad was really active and social. It's been comforting to hear of how many neighbors and friends loved him," he said.

Mr. Doherty leaves behind his sons, Patrick of Babylon and Kevin of Labertsville, New Jersey; his sister in law, Lolly Boyle; and his beloved dog, Rusty.

He reposed at the Charles G. Schmitt Funeral Home in Seaford on Jan. 10, 2008. A Mass of Christian Burial was said at St. William the Abbot R.C. Church on Jan. 14, 2008 followed by interment with a Marine Corps honor guard in St. Charles Cemetery.
