Massapequans need to get involved in school budget discussionsÑnow

Dear Editor,

I have been involved in Massapequa Schools Budget and Finance Committee for some time and have always stood alone against the cult-like members who refuse to see the forest through the trees. You may recall I wrote in an advertisement in the Post back in April of 06 commenting on gifts and ballooning contracts of our School District attorneys. I can't say that I enjoy the "I told you so" position that I'm now in.

For too long the people of Massapequa have turned their heads and believed our education administrators were managing the schools with compassion, commitment and accountability. When you have a budget of $168 million, there are big signals that must be heeded. Have we forgotten that the love of money is the root of all evil, and certainly the mother of corruption?

All across Long Island there is a call for more New York State Aid. While it is true we are not getting our fair share, in the wake of educational scandals, how can Albany do anything else but laugh. Who is leading this charge for aid but the people who have been draining the pockets of the taxpayer to the point of now calling on Albany to bail them out. We have to clean out the school boards first. They are the culprits; they are the YES Sayers.

When we allow the spouse of a teacher to preside over the School Board and allow for a public relations firm to be contracted to spin our educational information, and continue to allow the same people on the board to continue year after year, then we deserve everything we get.

The most urgent issue for a Long Islander the cost of education and real property taxes. For sale signs continue to crowd the landscape with no end in sight. School taxes are the leading cause. But what is our money buying? Use your head Massapequan's and get involved, vote and get these people and their kind off the school board before it's too late.

Gary Bennett, Massapequqa

The writer is a former candidate for the Massapequa School Board and is making another bid for a seat on the board in May.
