Catherine McGarry: former Biltmore Shores resident

Called the "sweetest woman that ever lived" by those who knew her, Catherine McGarry spent her life helping others, serving her church and loving her family. She died Jan. 15, 2008 in Clearwater, Florida at the age of 95.

As a child, she immi- grated to the United States with her family from Claire County, Ireland. She lived in Roosevelt for many years, before moving to Biltmore Shores in Massapequa where she dedicated her life to raising her family. Thirty years ago, she moved to Clearwater, Florida where she kept active with her many friends.

She took her driving test for the first time in her 60s and got her first driver's license while she was in her 60s, and passed. According to her granddaughter Jean Gray, she was a talented Irish Step Dancer and, while in Massapequa, was very involved with the St. Rose of Lima Church.

Mrs. McGarry leaves behind her children: Mary Regina Linnsen of Haverstraw, New York and John of Massapequa Park; her eight grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, James, and her children John and Jean.

She reposed at the Massapequa Funeral Home in Massapequa Park. A Funeral Mass was said on January 18, 2008 at St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church followed by interment in Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.
