Freedom demands action

The week of March 16-23 is National Sunshine Week, celebrating those laws and regulations that provide the public with the right to access- and become a part of- their government at the national, state and local levels.

These laws, fought for over the years, mandate, with few exceptions, that government meetings be open to the public and government documents be available to them. They are a vestige of the intentions of our Founding Fathers who wrote a constitution that makes government accountable to the people and not people accountable to the government.

But as with all rights, Sunshine laws carry with them a measure of citizen responsibility. Laws that benefit the public call for public action and an interested, involved citizenry that participates in its process of government is vital if we hope to protect our freedoms and be a country "of the people, for the people and by the people."
