Education aid is inequitable

Dear Editor:

I am sure that many of our residents read the article on Sun., Feb. 10 in Newsday regarding Sachem School District's proposition of a zero tax increase. Perhaps I can shed some light as to one of the reasons this is possible for Sachem but not for many of the other districts on Long Island. For the 2007/2008 school year, Sachem received 42.4 percent in state aid towards their budget, which meant $10,294 per student.

Our district, Massapequa, received 15.1 percent in state aid, which translated into $2,853 per student for this school year. The extra $7,441 per student would have made all the difference to our taxpayers. Nassau County just does not receive their fair share from Albany.

Christine Lupetin Perrino The writer is a Massapequa School Board Trustee is expected to seek reelection in May.
