Anti drug and drinking seminar April 9

Massapequa Junior/Senior High School PTSA, Health, Wellness and Safety Committee will host a presentation by YES Community Counseling Center of Underage Drinking and Drugging, WE Are Not Immune, April 9, 7:45 p.m., at the Massapequa High School Main Campus Cafeteria, 4925 Merrick Rd. All parents, students and community members are welcome to attend. If you aren't sure if you should attend this presentation, here are some facts which may interest you: •The #1 place kids get alcohol - At Home •1,700 college students die each year from alcohol related injuries •In the U.S. Alcohol kills more kids than all illegal drugs combined •Each day 7,000 kids under the age of 16 take their first drink •If a young person starts drinking before the age of 15, they are four times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than if they wait to start drinking until after the legal age of 21. •80 percent of parents believe that neither alcohol nor marijuana is usually available at parties their teens attend, but 50 percent of teen partygoers attend parties where alcohol, drugs or both are available. •Only 12 percent of parents see drugs as their teen's greatest concern, but twice as many teens (27 percent) say drugs are their greatest concern.
