After more than three decades in government, Massapequan Bruce E. Foley has decided to retire- both from the Town of Oyster Bay and as the Republican Leader of Massapequa Park, effective the end of February.

For more than 35 years Foley served the Town of Oyster Bay, most recently as the Commissioner of the Department of Community and Youth Services. And for 20 years as a Republican Leader.

"It's time to move on," he said. "I have had a wonderful career and (John) Venditto was a great boss who didn't micro-manage me like some bosses do. He allowed me to run my own department."

Foley was responsible for establishing the Town's popular Music Under the Stars program.

Although Foley is retiring, he won't be moving from the town he's faithfully served for so many years. He said his plans include traveling with his wife Francine, who's retiring from LIPA, and enjoying their summer home in Florida.

His replacement is Maureen Fitzgerald, a lifelong Massapequa resident. Her most recent position in the Town was that of the Commissioner of Intergovernmental Affairs.

"I'm excited and pleased that John Venditto has chosen me to take over the department," said the 55-year old Fitzgerald who has worked for the Town for more than 12 years.

The Department of Community and Youth Services handles cultural and performing arts, a drug abuse control agency, youth services, senior citizens, activities for the handicapped and veterans services.

"My new department will also be handling Golden Age Housing, a senior program which is being transferred from my old department, and one I am familiar with," Fitzgerald said when asked if there are any programs she'd like to add in the future.

Foley had been at the helm of the Massapequa Park Republican Club with Oyster Bay Town Clerk and former New YorkState Assemblyman Steve Labriola. Labriola said he's just trying to keep up with his predecessor's solid work ethic.

"There is an awful lot of work to do, and I have more respect for Bruce than ever," laughed Labriola who has taken over as executive committeeman for the GOPclub in January . "I'm just trying to keep all the balls in the air."
