Donation sends P'edge chorus on a musical event this month
by Kelly Walter

Plainedge officials accept donation from residents David and Donna Davidson.
David and Donna Davidson, owners of We Buy Guitars, have made a donation to the Plainedge High School- and it is music to the ears of the Plainedge School chorus.

The Davidsons donated $20,000 to fund a trip for 96 members of the school district's chorus. The event is March 27 through March 30 to Williamsburg, Virginia. The group is scheduled to perform at the Jamestown Festival Park and Busch Gardens, both in that location.

Christine P'Simer, Superintendent of Plainedge Schools, said Davidson met Peter Lakes, the Plainedge Chorus Director, and heard of the plans for the performances. Davidson offered the money to help make the trip possible.

"We Buy Guitars, LLC has been in the position of supplying the world's rarest vintage guitars to the most discriminating players and collectors alike since 1968," said Davidson in an email to P'Simer. "Mrs. Davidson and I feel the time is right to give back to our schools, which have worked so hard to provide only the very best musical education to our young people."

Peter Lakes, the Plainedge Chorus Director, met Mr. Davidson after the winter concert in December. The Davidsons' daughter is in the chorus. The chorus was trying to sell CDs at the concert to raise funds for the trip, when Davidson told Lakes that he was interested in making a donation.

"As aPlainedge resident and being an owner of a Vintage musical instrument business as well as a musician myself,I felt the time was right to invest back into the Plainedge district music program," said Davidson. "Music programs always seem to be the ones that suffer during any budgetary cutbacks."

The students were thrilled to hear the news. "The students' reaction was of course priceless," said Lakes. "For some, it was complete astonishment. For others, there was a look of relief, realizing that they would be bringing home some good news to their parents, who were anticipating a large final payment for the trip."

The donation was accepted by Lakes and 3 chorus students at the February 14 board meeting.

"This donation is truly a milestone for our choir. This sort of recognition reinforces for our students that their voices are being heard in the community," said Lakes. He added, "We want to express our deepest gratitude to Mr. Davidson and We Buy Guitars for their generosity and belief in the voices of Plainedge High School."

David Davidson worked at Sam Ash Music where he met Richard Friedman, the son of the founders of We Buy Guitars in Manhattan, according to the company's website. At that time the business had been closed and the two men established the chain's multimillion dollar vintage guitar department. Over the next ten years, they continued to be the exclusive buyers for Sam Ash's 45 stores, and in 2005, decided to venture out on their own. They decided to name their business after the operation Friedman's parents had run since 1922.
