John D'Agostino, 50+ year Massapequan Longtime 'Pequan John J. D'Agostino loved the Great South Bay and spent his life living near, and sailing on it. He died Jan. 24, 2008 at the age of 85 after battling cancer. "My dad loved life and was a strong man," said his daughter, Karin Antignano, who added that her father loved to spend time on his boats and was a member for more than 25 years of the Freeport Yacht Club. "John was a good hearted man and I will think of him every day of my life," said Herb Auleta, a friend of more than 20 years from the yacht club. "He could fix and build anything - he's helped me finish basements, install plumbing and pool houses. He'd do anything for anyone." Born in Queens, he was a decorated World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps as a tail gunner in the South Pacific. In 1955, he moved his family to Boston Avenue in North Massapequa in a home that he built. In 1967, he moved first to Biltmore Shores and then to Roosevelt Avenue in Nassau Shores, and lived there for more than 40 years. A contractor by trade, he ran his own company in Nassau County called D&S Construction for many years until he went to work for the City of New York's construction department. He retired in1988. In addition to his daughter, Karin and her husband Vincent, he leaves behind his other children: Louis and his wife Nancy, Maria and her partner Kathy West, and John and his wife Sharon. His grandchildren, Taryn, Michael and Joseph, and his sister Viola Allocco also survive him. He was predeceased by his wife, Maureen.
He reposed at the Massapequa FuneÅral Home in Massapequa Park on Jan. 28, 2008. He was buried with military honors in Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn.
