Historical Society offers free aviation lecture March 30 Leroy E. Douglas, curator of the LIRepublic Airport Historical Society, will conclude the Farmingdale- Bethpage Historical Society Winter Lecture Series, Sun., March 30 2 p.m. with a presentation on The Origins of Republic Aviation Corporation, 1931- 1941. The program will be held at the Farmingdale Public Library, 116 Merritts Rd., Farmingdale. Douglas will discuss recent research "finds" regarding the internationally celebrated corporation, which was one of Long Island's largest employers for many years. Republic Aviation was formed October 1939 as a result of major dissatisfaction with the technologically innovative, but financially disappointing, Seversky Aircraft Corporation, which originated in College Point, Queens in 1931. Within 12 months of the breath-taking Republic P-47 fighter concept by Alexander Kartveli in mid-1940, Republic's workforce and factory space mushroomed tremendously, laying the foundation for the production of almost 10,000 P-47 Thunderbolts in Farmingdale from March 1942 to November 1945.
Lawrence R. Jorgensen, president of the Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society, invites all interested area residents to attend this free program. Further information is available at 249-3099.
