Let's keep skateboarding athletes safe and near home

Two weeks ago, a group of youngsters were going door to door along Park Boulevard and asking shoppers there to sign a petition. This group was pleading their case admirably to each passerby, and we stopped to see what they were up to.

The result is our front page story this week, outlining their effort to urge Town and Village officials to consider building a skateboarding park within the confines of the Massapequas. Their enthusiasm and optimism was admirable, and their passion for their sport undeniable.

Yet, the issue poses some problems. It is more dangerous than other sports such as baseball or basketball for which the Town and Village provides adequate space. And, the area is already so developed that it is difficult to imagine where a park could be constructed.

But that does not mean that the issue is unsurmountable. Additional insurance costs the Town or Village may incur could be offset by skateboarding permits and the space required is not as expansive as that of a ball field. We would hope that our local officials are as caught up by these athletes' plea as we were and consider their request seriously.
