Local Armed Forces in the news Marine Corps Pvt. Christopher D. Sagarino, son of Mary D. Sagarino of Farmingdale, and Dennis V. Sagarino also of Farmingdale, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Sagarino and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a. m., by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Sagarino spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, handto hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training. Sagarino and other recruits also received instruction on the Marine Corps' core values- honor, courage and commitment, and what the core values mean in guiding personal and professional conduct. The training phase ended with The Crucible, a 54-hour, team evolution culminating in an emotional ceremony in which recruits are presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and addressed as "Marines" for the first time in their careers. Maj. Gen. Joseph J. Taluto, The Adjutant General for the State of New York, announces the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capabilities for additional responsibility and leadership. From our area, two residents were promoted. Susan Zurlo, of Massapequa, and serving with the 442D Military Police Company, is promoted to the rank of Private 1st Class. Guido Marin, of Massapequa Park, and serving with the HHC 1-69th Infantry is promoted too the rank of Private.
