MSD to appoint Charles Sulc as new superintendent

By Carolyn James

The Massapequa School Board will be appointing Dr. Charles Sulc at its Superintendent of Schools at its regular board meeting tonight. Sulc, who has been serving as acting superintendent since the board suspended Superintendent Dr. Maureen Flaherty, will assume his post Sept. 12, 2008, the day after Flaherty’s contract expires.

Sulc will receive a salary of $240,000 a year, with an additional $13,000 annuity and a $7,500 allowance for a car. He has been assuming the responsibilities of superintendent since Flaherty was suspended in June, 2007.

School Board President Richard Krebs declined to discuss the decision today, saying the board would have a statement following its vote tonight, but Michael Conte, the district’s spokesman said that while the district has continued to pay Flaherty, it has not expended any additional money.

“Mr. Sulc moved into the superintendent’s position without any additional pay, and no additional staff was hired to assist him,” said Conte.

The meeting will be held tonite, April 3, 2008 at 8 p.m., and includes a budget discussion. For more information, call the district at 516-797-6160.
