MFD holds elementary school fire prevention program
The Massapequa Fire Department Fire Prevention Program culminated with an award presentation in the Fire District Board Room on Mon., Feb. 11. Four students representing kindergarten, first, second and third grades won the District Wide Poster Contest following Fire Prevention Week. Firefighters from the Massapequa Fire Department visit all of the district elementary schools each October to speak to the students about fire safety and prevention. Students in the primary grades create their own posters to reinforce the safety message delivered by the fire department. Winners of the poster contest were invited to the Board of Fire Commissioners meeting to receive their prizes. First Place Winners in each grade level received a certificate from the fire department, a fire extinguisher, and their own ride to school aboard one of the fire departments fire engines. Additionally second and third place winners were presented with prizes including fire extinguishers and smoke detectors at their own schools.
District-Wide Winners, shown, left to right, are Jack Stolfi, second grade, Birch Lane; Samantha DeLiguori, first grade, Fairfield; Gary DiDonna, third grade, McKenna and Matt Winkler, kindergarten, East Lake. Shown with the students are Commissioner Michael Hanna, First Assistant Chief Thomas Fitzsimmons and Second Assistant Chief Peter Anglim.
