Massapequa School Board appoints Charles Sulc as new superintendent The Massapequa School Board voted last week to appoint Acting Superintendent of Schools Charles Sulc the district's superintendent, effective Sept. 12, 2008. He replaces Dr. Maureen Flaherty who the board suspended in June, filing more than two-dozen charges against her. Flaherty's contract expires Sept. 11, 2008. Effective July 1, Sulc is to receive a salary of $240,000, plus an annuity of $13,000 and a car allowance of $7,500. The contract runs through June 2009. His current salary is $195,582. Flaherty is receiving her salary of $208,000 through September 11, 2008. The school board's decision to keep Sulc in the post relieves the district of the work and expense involved in conducting a personnel search, said school officials. "We started to develop characteristics of what we were looking for (in a school superintendent), and kept talking about it and thinking of what skills they should have and the more we thought about it the more we realized we had someone who was doing the job and had all of those skills already," said Richard Krebs, school board president. Despite that, the board kept the process going and began a search, finetuning the standards and discussing candidates. "As we continued to look at everything it became even more apparent that we had someone who met those standards and decided to appoint Charlie (Sulc)," said Krebs. The district has eliminated the position of deputy superintendent but will add an assistant to the superintendent's position, probably in the fall. Flaherty, who is being paid for the duration of her contract, said that she wished Sulc well in his position, but added that she is challenging the school board's decision and wants her "day in court." She went public for the first time this week, releasing the list of the allegations filed against her by the district to the Massapequa Post (see sidebar). She said the district has brought "trumped up charges," against her that are false and cannot be proven and that she has been unable to finda new position as a result of those actions. "The district continues to delay a fair hearing on this because they have no evidence to substantiate their claims and I am, therefore, being denied due process," she said. "I can't even get an appointment for an interview for another superintendent's position," she said. The decision to appoint Sulc was unanimous. Board Trustee Tim Taylor was not at the meeting due to illness, but emailed a comment to Krebs before the meeting. In it he said he was not "thrilled" with the decision but decided to support it because Sulc is a competent superintendent has worked in the post for a year without additional com- pensation. In addition, he said that he did not want to see the district "getting stuck" with the cost of a new search that would have ultimately ended up costing taxpayers even more money.
