Organist Mark Victor Smith joins St. David's

Originally, Mark Victor Smith trained to pursue a career in education. However, attending the University of Michigan School of Music gave him a wellrounded musical and academic grounding (including piano, organ and voice) so that after two years of teaching in the public schools he was able to go full time into music ministry in the Chicago area. He now joins St. David's as its organist.

St. Barbara's Roman Catholic Church in Chicago provided another great training opportunity where he was associate director of music.

Bitten by the theatre bug, Smith decided to come closer to New York City, settling in Schenectady. For four years, he traveled to the Big Apple to take voice lessons and auditioned for show for regional and summer stock theatres.

Smith finally moved to the city in 1989 to pursue a singing career, acting and singing. He started to play again, taking organist positions as the chapel organist at PolyPrep Day School and St. John's Episcopal Church in Bay Ridge.

Although no longer at PolyPrep, he is still an accompanist for the St. John's University Mixed Cho- rus and picks up gigs as both an organist and pianist/ accompanist at Deer Park High School and playing throughout the region. Smith said he is looking forward to a long stay at St. David's. He hopes he can bring musical and spiritual joy to Massapequa Park and the surrounding communities with additional musical events at St. David's .
