County Democrats are putting politics before people in Mejias' spat
Editorial

N.C. Leg. Dave Mejias has been touted as the bad-boy of the Democratic party, and was slapped down last week by Democratic leaders for failing to walk the party line-again. He refused to vote for a traffic and parking administrative fee increase requested by the County Executive. Summarily, he was removed as vice chairman of the legislature's Rules Committee, a powerful post.

This is not the first time Mejias has strayed from the arms of his fellow Dems and not the first time they have "punished" him for it. He has consistently refused to support a Democratic initiative to rewrite the county charter designed expressly to give county lawmakers a pay raise. He has maintained publicly that the Democrats need to play by the rules and that any changes in the county charter must come only after a commission is called and all of the pimples and flaws of this document have the same opportunity of review, discussion, and debate as the one that outlines the procedure for pay raises. The Democrats didn't like Mejias' position on that either.

Decades ago, when President Gerald Ford pardoned President Richard Nixon, he understood that it was the right thing to do for the country. He understood, too, that there would be political consequences for his actions, the most significant of which was that he would likely never have the chance to serve as an elected president. He did what the country needed anyway.

Mejias, like Ford, is on the right side of the issue of pay raises, and the county charter. We may not always agree with him on the issues, but in this case he is right and is thinking of his constituents, many of whom are having a hard time making ends meet.

More than that, Mejias is holding his party to a higher standard. Instead of acting like political bullies, county democrats should take his lead and put people before partisan politics and pay raises.
