Readers respond to Flaherty charges Dear Editor: We cannot remain silent in the wake of a tragic effort by this School Board to ruin the career of anyone for political reasons. If this was not clear before, it is crystal clear now, as we see bogus charges listed in your paper against suspended Superintendent Dr. Flaherty, who is still being paid and has still not had a hearing. Whether you liked this superintendent or not, the tactics used against her are loaded with political venom and will ultimately cost the tax payer when this victim has her day in court. The public is also a victim, as once again we will pay because of incompetence and possibly bad legal advice. Dr. Flaherty's first charges are for offering her opinions to the Board. Well, I guess we have to fire all the administrators and lawyers too, for this is what they get overpaid to do. Above all, this superintendent was charged with seeking financial aid for the district, which did come about to the tune of nearly $500,000 per year. I was there when the Board voted approval and gave this women accolades for her achievement in renting the Hawthorne building. I could go on for pages, but my points are easily made in these few paragraphs. This kind of politics is a cancer that we, as citizens, should not condone. This Board makes a mockery of free speech, integrity, accountability, commitment and above all compassion.
The most important thing to remember is, it is our children who bare the ultimate burden. If the Board of Ed and Administration have no integrity or compassion within themselves, how are they guiding our children? Dear Editor: It is mind boggling, in reviewing the article in last week's Massapequa Post, "Flaherty goes public with district's charges," as to how the Massapequa School Board could display such arrogance and fiscal irresponsibilty. First, my gut tells me that if the District needed a series of forty-four petty charges to pile against Dr. Flaherty, it did not believe that it had a strong reason to suspend her. That gut feeling is bolstered by the fact that Dr. Flaherty was suspended with full pay, and not terminated from her position. Obviously, if the District believed that it had a strong case and just cause against Dr. Flaherty, it would have terminated her position without paying her for a full year to sit at home. Second, as most of the "charges" appear to be based on allegations that are from many months prior to the suspension with pay, it renders it a travesty for then Board President Arlene Martin to call an emergency executive session in June 2007, just after her unsuccessful re-election bid, for the sole purpose of suspending Dr. Flaherty just days before President Martin was to leave office. Do I smell a political, vindictive rat, at taxpayer expense?
Finally, what I find equally disturbing is the report that a sitting Board member attempted to avoid her responsibility by seeking to charge the District for a musical instrument that was in the care and custody of her child. By process of deduction, it appears that the Board member in question is Christine Perrino. It is an outrage that Ms. Perrino would attempt to abuse her position to shun her personal financial responsibily and charge it to the District's taxpayers. Thankfully, Alan Adcock caught this and prevented it from effectuation. What other abuses by Board members remain secret and under cloak?
