Massapequa students extend holiday spirit of giving

With character education taking a leading role in the classroom experience in the Massapequa Public School District, it is not surprising that the generosity and compassion of Massapequa's students and community is a year round occurrence. Although the spirit of giving is more recognized during the holiday season, Massapequa's students, under the guidance of their families and teachers, are always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, even after the holidays have come and gone.

The Birch Lane Elementary School community extended the holiday spirit of giving into February when the PTA sponsored its Annual Food Drive. In keeping with the spirit of Valentine's Day, students kept in mind that February is a good month to open their hearts and share with those who are less fortunate. More than 20 boxes of nonperishable food items, toiletries and paper goods were collected for a local outreach program that serves the needs of the community.

The East Lake Elementary School Student Council, under the guidance of Robert Sollazzo and Brett Hoehn, also kept the holiday spirit alive and well far beyond the month of December when they sponsored and organized a school-wide toy drive. The East Lake school community collected many gifts for children in need, which they donated to Senator Fuschillo's "Extend the Holidays" campaign.
