Ames students mix it up to challenge social boundaries

Shown in the photo, Massapequa High School - Ames Campus students Steve Cardone, Joe Fitzgerald, and Victoria Hoffman used the "Conversation Starters" to learn more about each other during Mix It Up Day in the cafetorium during lunch.
Every year, many students share a common concern about the difficulties of fitting in at school. Nowhere in school are social boundaries more clearly drawn than in the cafeteria. On Nov.13 the students at Massapequa High School - Ames Campus challenged social boundaries and promoted peer tolerance by participating in the nationwide event titled Mix It Up Day.

This event was spearheaded by the Ames Character Education Team and its subcommittee HOPE (Helping Other People Everyday). Students involved in this committee worked diligently to develop activities to foster new friendships and respect among their peers. During lunch, students "mixed it up" with individuals from different social groups and were supported by visiting 10th and 11th grade Character Education alumni members.
