Settlement reached with local water districts over monitoring wells for Liberty contamination

After years of legal negotiations, South Farmingdale and Massapequa water districts have reached a settlement over the Liberty Superfund site. Under the agreement, both districts will be reimbursed for the costs of permits, construction, design, sampling and installation of the outpost monitoring wells, which were installed by the districts in 1997.

The site has been the focus of a cooperative activity for cleanup for decades. The monitoring wells were placed upstream from the site to provide an early warning system to alert both districts if contamination for the site, and enabling the districts to react to potentially contaminated water quickly. The last round of sampling showed no signs of contamination from the site, but the monitoring will continue.
