Senator Hannon works to combat gang activity

Senator Kemp Hannon (R-Garden City) announced the Senate passed legislation to make engaging in criminal gang activity a Class A misdemeanor.

The legislation, S. 2877, defines this activity as solicitation to join a gang, deterring someone from leaving a gang, concealing illegal gang activity, and attempting to exercise control over a geographic area. The legislation also amends the Criminal Procedure Law. This amendment would make the new crime of engaging in criminal street gang activity a "designated offense" for the purpose of the issuance of an eavesdropping or video surveillance warrant.

Gang activity has led to an increase in violent incidents on Long Island over the past few years. Just recently, Nassau officials announced two dozen gang members - all in their teens and twenties - were arrested. They are being charged with drug sales, gun possession and witness intimidation.

"These are young people who are terrorizing innocent people and throwing their lives away," said Senator Hannon. "We need to stand firm against gangs and gang activity for the protection of our children and our community."
